Basic Concepts of Butterfly Valves
A butterfly valve is a simple, compact valve that controls fluid flow by rotating a disc (butterfly plate). It offers rapid opening and closing, easy operation, and is widely used in water treatment, chemical, and HVAC industries. Butterfly valves can be classified into five main types based on their structure, each with its unique design and applicable scenarios.

 

Five Types of Butterfly Valves
Center-line Butterfly Valve: The butterfly plate is located in the center of the pipeline. It has a simple structure, good sealing performance, and is suitable for low-pressure applications.


Double-eccentric Butterfly Valve: The butterfly plate is offset from the center of the pipeline, reducing friction and extending service life. Commonly used in medium-pressure systems.


Triple-eccentric Butterfly Valve: The butterfly plate and valve seat form a triple eccentricity, providing excellent sealing performance. Suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure environments.


Flanged Butterfly Valve: The valve body has a flange, facilitating installation and disassembly. Suitable for applications with high requirements for pipeline connections.


Wafer Butterfly Valve: The valve body is relatively thin and is clamped between pipelines with bolts, saving space and suitable for compact installations.

 

How to Choose the Right Butterfly Valve
When selecting a butterfly valve, consider the fluid properties, pressure rating, temperature range, and installation space. Centerline butterfly valves are suitable for low-pressure water treatment, double eccentric valves are suitable for medium pressure, and triple eccentric valves can handle harsh conditions. Flanged butterfly valves and wafer butterfly valves can be flexibly selected according to installation requirements.
